Day 77 - June 1, 2002
Today we went to Lassen Volcanic National Park. In the spring of 1914, a series of relatively small eruptions began. After reaching its peak in 1915, the activity continued until about 1921. Main Park Road winds around Lassen Peak affording views of the volcano and evidence of its destructive might. In the southern half of the park gurgling mudpots and roaring fumaroles contribute to the unusual atmosphere. What a sight for the eyes. We started with a hike around Lake Manzanita. What wonderful scenery!!!
Lassen Peak and Manzanita Lake
Devastated Area - a swath of volcanic scars steadily repopulating with conifers. Note, the barren areas (it was strippe dof all vegetation by hot blasts, avalanches and mudflows) and virtual lack of grasses and just a few trees. Look closely in the background and you can see some of the volcanic rock that was thrown during the 1915 eruption.
